ATSF Ft-58 flatcar with Caterpillar D9 load
I merged a plastic Intermountain 60' pre-decorated ATSF flatcar with a cast-metal
Norscot Caterpillar D9 dozer to create a reasonable fascimile of an interesting car and
load. I modified the D9 dozer and kitbashed tie downs to match the prototype photo.
Below: My finished model is a "close enough" representation that captures the overall look and feel of the prototype.
Below: To better match the prototype photos, I kitbashed tie-downs by combining portions of Alkem Scale Models
etched metal military type tie-downs with portions of the Intermountain flatcar plastic tie-downs. These were painted
black and glued to the D9 tracks, with their bottom ends tucked into the flat car stake pockets. The Caterpillar D9
parts themselves are firmly glued to the flat car deck. The wood bracing is fashioned from scrap bits of basswood.
Below: I came across this flatcar on a railfanning trip many years ago, and always wanted to replicate it in HO scale. This Santa Fe car
is an Ft-35 class, quite similar to the Ft-58 class I modeled. This Caterpillar D9 is very similar to the HO Norscot brand model I used.
Below: I had to use "modeler's license" for bracing the two large scraper struts (left end of car in this photo), as my
prototype photos don't clearly show how these parts were loaded on the flatcar. Also, the prototype's large rear claws
are facing up, but changing this on the Norscot model was not practical so I left them in the pointing-down position.

For the Norscot brand cast metal Caterpillar D9 dozer, I removed the large dozer blade (not an easy task!) and repainted it
from black to Cat yellow (a custom blend of TTX yellow and beige). I also fully disassembled the main body and cab to remove
the stock operator figure, repaint some portions black and others yellow, and then dullcoted everything before re-assembly.
