Glen Frazer Free-mo Module - Derail section
This section is named for the track derail where the maintenance-of-way (MofW) spur branches from
the main track. The majority of this section has three parallel tracks - the mainline in the middle, the
passing siding on the outside, and the MofW spur on the inside. This section features a length of
Franklin Canyon Road paralleled by a wooded creek that passes under the road via a small culvert,
which both extend onto the adjacent East Switch section. An old Caterpillar tractor rusts away
at the forest's edge near an abandoned orchard at the base of a fill supporting the right-of-way.
Below: Westbound freight on the Derail section. The creek can be seen on the far right, where it runs under the road and emerges
near the center. Note the oval handhold for moving the section during transport and setup, and the DCC throttle jack. At the left
end is a recessed DPDT pushbutton that controls the turnout for the MofW spur. The other DPDT controls the operating derail.
Left: The fill above the old orchard
features wild grass made from
latch-hook yarn, bushes made
from painted polyfiber and foam
flock
, and tall dried weeds made
from craft brooms.

Right: A scratch-built "keep off"
warning sign, modeled after
actual signs at Glen Frazer, made
from a strip-wood post, a styrene
sign, strip-brass brackets, and a
decal once offered by the
SFRH&MS. Weathering is
powdered chalks.
Right: The rusty Caterpillar appears to be
railfanning as another ATSF freight rolls past.

Right Below: A mixed freight heads
eastbound over the Derail section.

Below: Santa Fe DASH8-40BW 555, aka "triple
nickel", leads another eastbound UPS hotshot.
Below: A favorite shot - ATSF SDF40-2 5255 barrels eastbound
across the Derail section's fill on a warm spring day. See below
for descriptions of the fence posts and tall weeds.
Below: Superfleet power hustles a hot UPS intermodal eastbound.
The wooden cribbing supporting the derail switchstand is visible.
Below: ATSF 807 westbound has taken the siding as it
enters the Derail section from the East Switch section.
Rough-hewn fence posts were whittled down from
shish-ka-bob skewers and painted brown with gray washes.
Below: An east-looking view of the track derail, which
was made by modifying a Walthers #5 left-hand turnout.
A Tortoise switch machine moves the single point rail.
